Yesterday, I was chatting with my 17-year-old cousin, who’s an incredible artist looking to get into design school. We were talking about what to include in his portfolio when he mentioned how hard it is to find time to draw with all his schoolwork. He even wondered if the reason his hands shake every time he picks up a pencil is because he doesn’t draw often enough. I thought that was a little strange, so I asked, “But don’t you take notes in school?” and he said, “Oh no, we hardly take any notes. It’s all condensed, plus we just type it out now.”

Ah. That explains a lot. I’ve noticed people don’t write as much these days.

I remember my mom teaching me cursive. I don’t recall learning to print, but I vividly remember forming loops for the L’s, the tails of the Y’s, and connecting all the letters in between. My brother and I had handwriting practice sessions under my mom’s watchful eye, and dare I say, we got pretty good at 'drawing' letters.

Looking back, I’m convinced it helped sharpen my creativity. Learning cursive was my first connection between brain, pencil, and paper. It’s similar to drawing—training my little fingers in control, and my mind in focus. I fell in love with the haptic act of writing early on, and I still write almost every day.

Writing is such an important part of the creative process for illustrators and artists. It builds hand control, gets us comfortable with our tools, and strengthens the interaction between pencil and paper. It also boosts stability and confidence. So, for the generation of artists and designers who rely on digital tools like Photoshop and Procreate, I’d really recommend adding writing to your daily practice.

And if you’re not in a creative field but want to bring more creativity into your job, try brainstorming on paper.

San Francisco Pen Show

Speaking of which, I went to the San Francisco Pen Show recently—a delightful event where people showcase writing instruments and accessories (yes, it’s a thing!). This was my second year attending, and it was amazing, as usual. Tons of artists gathered to celebrate their love of penmanship, and I saw some stunning handmade pens. I picked up these little pocket sketchbooks from Ayush Papers and a leather reusable sketchbook from Gobi Designs.

Web Zine Launch Party

Last month, I also tried selling my handmade items at a pop-up table for the first time. It was hosted by a small community in San Francisco called "the web," and I set up a table with my handmade pouches and leather accessories. It was a huge learning experience!

Creative Retreat with SCBWI

Now, this was the highlight of the month—maybe even the year. In Northern California, there’s this charming little sanctuary where a group of children’s book writers and illustrators, including me, gathered for a three-day retreat. It was pure magic.

The morning of the second day, I had this whole plan to sketch outdoors in the garden—with a to-do list and everything. There was a gentle hum in the air, and I physically felt my body relax. I ended up sitting there for 45 minutes, doing absolutely nothing, and it was the most freeing experience. I can’t even put it into words.

I met some of the kindest, most supportive people. I spent hours working on my book. I ate the most delicious farm-to-table vegetarian food prepared by Buddhist monks. I even trekked to the beach one morning. Along the way, I passed apple trees and horses. Now that I’m writing this, it feels so dreamy, I’m not even sure it really happened.

Obviously I made an illustrated journal spread about it! I used the Travelers notebook accordion insert, since I wanted to paint and write some thoughts!

The format of the accordion journal was fun, it allowed me to think of creative ways to use a long spread - another way to think about story-telling.

As I started taking photos, I realized a video is so much easier to show how the illustrated accordion format looks and works together as a journal, so here goes!

I’m planning to upload a process video on how to make your own sketchbook, so stay tuned for that.

Magnification of Spirit

After riding the high of the buildspace season 5 IRL event , I came home to my lonely desk - Nevertheless feeling motivated that there were people who may be interested in reading my book. Finding community is incredibly difficult as an independent illustrator and even though social media platforms are supposed to help us ‘make’ connections, most times I feel like I am lonelier than ever, drawing away and making things by myself in my studio.

Meeting people in real life reminded me how important it was to feel like you are a part of something.

In a fitting article from The Marginalian by Maria Popova, she discusses how Patti Smith talks about ‘Seeking out that which magnified your spirit’.

Who are the people, ideas, and books that magnify your spirit? Find them, hold on to them, and visit them often. Use them not only as a remedy once spiritual malaise has already infected your vitality but as a vaccine administered while you are healthy to protect your radiance.

Patti Smith’s original podcast captured by the New York Public library podcast explores her thoughts on love friendship and relationships and surely worth listening to.

Illustrated Journalling

In an attempt to show everyone my completed illustrated journal of my recent trip to Portland, I made a flip through video. I am still getting used to this new format, but I hope this gives you a calm moment to look into my journals. Maybe next time I’ll do one with a talking walk through explaining my thoughts ?

Eskimo Cookbook

While searching for obscure and fascinating dishes from around the world, I stumbled upon a subreddit dedicated to food historians. Curious, I engaged with the community, asking them to share any unique recipes they knew of. One member pointed me to a delightful find: the Eskimo Cook Book created by the students of Shishmaref Day School in Alaska. This charming collection of recipes was compiled by the students, featuring dishes taught to them by their mothers and prepared in their homes. Each recipe is accompanied by endearing illustrations, and the book exudes a genuine warmth that comes from unpolished, unedited text. The proceeds from the book's sales supported the Alaska Crippled Children’s Association—a true gem in every sense.

When I asked people to share experiences with food that were close to their hearts, I never expected to hear such heartwarming stories from such a diverse group of people.

Today I want to tell you Marcus's story.

Marcus fondly remembers making zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) with his grandmother to celebrate the summer solstice in Chinese culture.

As a first-generation American, gathering with family and friends to make these traditional Chinese dumplings, which require a lot of time and effort, was Marcus's way of showing his love and affection while also staying connected to his roots.

Zongzi varies across different parts of Asia, with each region adding its own unique twists and flavors.

Zongzi is typically savory and made with glutinous rice, filled with ingredients like pork belly, mung beans, and chestnuts, all wrapped in lotus leaves.

Zongzi is traditionally made and consumed during the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. The legend of zongzi is tied to Qu Yuan, a Chinese poet and minister who drowned himself in protest against corruption. Villagers, wanting to prevent fish from consuming his body, threw rice dumplings into the river.

Pretty cool, huh?

Since then, zongzi has been made to honor Qu Yuan's loyalty and to celebrate Chinese heritage and culture.

To Marcus, zongzi is a poignant reminder of the love and connection he shares with his grandmother, as they gathered with friends and family to carry on this cherished tradition.

As an Indian-born immigrant living in the United States, zongzi represents fragments of tradition that communities pass down through generations—to honor those we've lost, cherish what matters most, and uphold community and love.

I've always been intrigued by food. Not just because it tastes good, but also because of how different parts of the world treat food. Food can inform us of climate, culture, and geography.

There is so much to be learned about food that it has caught my attention enough for me to decide to author and illustrate a book based on obscure food from around the world.

So, what is obscure food?

Well, it's not the kind of food that is so obscure it repulses you. No, it's more like the kind of food you might find only in the cozy comfort of someone's home on a cold winter day. The kind of food you fondly remember when you are stuck in your college dorm room. The ones you associate with memories of comfort, companionship, and excitement.

This is NOT a book about the "30 most delicious foods from around the world," . Because that would include "chicken tikka masala," "pad thai," and the "American cheeseburger"—stuff that most people don't make and eat on a daily basis at home. I've realized that people don't have the fondest memories associated with food found on most restaurant menus.

I've been thinking about so many ways to make this book feel special and meaningful. Not just something where I Google the most famous dishes from around the world and illustrate it, right? How do I make it personal, but still relatable enough that everyone 'gets it'?

Here’s a sample version of a spread.

In this AI-generating, mass-producing information culture, I believe everything I put out into the world should be meaningful, genuine, and ‘REAL’. So a few decisions were made.

1. Every single page will be illustrated.

2. Every single text will be hand-lettered.

3. At least a portion of the book will feature dishes from real people from different parts of the world, relaying their personal experiences with food.

If you are an illustrator or artist, you most likely have a sketchbook. Whether you have a favorite one or are still searching for the perfect fit, the world of sketchbooks or ‘visual journals’ is vast. There are travel sketchbooks, food journals, experimental ones, and subject-specific study books. Your sketchbook can be as flexible or as structured as you want it to be. That’s why I love them so much.

Today, I want to share how I make my own sketchbook and how you can too (and why you should).

I started making sketchbooks to record my travel adventures. I loved the idea of having one book encapsulate all my travel experiences, with sketches of people I met, food I ate, and places I visited. As a mixed media artist, I use fountain pens, watercolors, and fine-liners. I also enjoy collaging and embellishing with ephemera. This led me to discover the nuances of paper—differences between brands, grain direction, water absorption, pulp retention, etc. Finding a paper that worked for both ink and watercolor was challenging. The best compromise I found was bristol board multi-media paper, but its thickness made me feel like everything I created on it had to be world-changing.

After a lot of trial and error, I found that the Moleskine pocket sketchbook best met my needs, though it was also somewhat of an adjustment. Not the A5, art, or other sizes—just the pocket sketchbook. It’s practical and durable with a hardbound cover, elastic closure, and paper that works well enough for both watercolor and fountain pens. While not perfect, it’s a happy balance. At least the thin pages didn’t give me anxiety about what I create on them.

However, at $23, it’s expensive for a pocket-sized sketchbook with about 70 pages. And the cover was kind of boring.

So, I decided to make my own sketchbooks. And I did! And many!

Some are chunky because of the longer duration of the trip.

Some are pretty thin!

It was surprisingly easier that I thought. (Don’t get me wrong, I have had my fair share of wasted paper trying to make perfect book ends but I am getting better). The best part was that it is customizable. You can choose any paper you want and create a combination sketchbook for your specific medium. You can customize the cover, the band, the bookmark—the possibilities are endless.

Yesterday, I made this sketchbook for my upcoming trip to Portland the following week.

The cover is made with canvas cloth. On one side, I printed a vintage trolley map of Portland, and on the other, I used Pellon fusible fleece to turn it into a functional bookcloth material. I then adhered it to the book board, creating a sturdy hard casing.

I added vinyl letter stickers on top and dated the spine. I can’t wait to start using it!

Over the past week, the internet has been flooded with anger, frustration, and, at times, hopelessness. It’s been a tough time for the creators' community, with AI appropriating artwork and big corporations facilitating and endorsing it. Amid explaining to my non-artist friends why this is problematic and enduring dismissive comments like ‘eventually technology catches up,’ I’ve been personally navigating how to advocate for myself in this situation.

The reality is, the internet ceased to be a fertile ground for creative growth nearly a decade ago. Now, it seems people can't tolerate it anymore. Loneliness has reached unprecedented levels, ironically exacerbated by ‘social media,’ originally designed to foster connections. I remember a time when relationships were more genuine, when validation didn’t hinge on online presence. We've created a sadly disconnected world for ourselves.

To live with sincerity in our culture of cynicism is a difficult dance — one that comes easily only to the very young and the very old.

Maria Popova beautifully articulates this struggle in her article on hope, cynicism, and the narratives we embrace in our polarized world.

Lately, I've pondered how artists can continue to contribute value despite the odds stacked against us—a perennial challenge throughout history. Artists document and preserve human history. Yet, our culture fixates on ‘making it,’ ‘10 things to achieve before 40,’ or ‘earning six figures from a side hustle,’ often missing the essence of why we create art in the first place. I'm weary of seeing these messages everywhere. While I am a huge advocate of self learning from ‘Youtube University’ - it’s not the platform that is the problem. It’s just us and what we want. What we tell ourselves. What we type into our search boxes and cram into our feeds and allow into our lives.

We are all so self-absorbed that we simply do not have time for anything else. Even ourselves. The irony is striking.

How do we stop doing this? I don’t know. I’m just figuring it out too. One way I've found solace is through sketchbooks. But that too is a battle against my inner perfectionist—ensuring it doesn’t become another project aimed at perfection..

Whenever I feel the stress of maintaining my sketchbook creeping in, I take a step back and pause until the perfectionism monster ebbs away. This is one of the beauties of something as simple as a sketchbook. It's not a project for a portfolio or a client, nor is it a social media obligation that demands daily posts. It's simply a book I open when and if I feel like it—those are my sketchbook rules.

I maintain sketchbooks as records of my life. I show it to my friends when they come over for dinner or take a peep to see what I am drawing. When they ask about my trip, I pass my sketchbook into their hands. Sometimes people ask “Is this personal? Can I read it?” Well, it is personal. But of course yes, you can read it.

I never paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality. - Frida Kahlo

That’s the whole point of the sketchbook. You are holding the artist’s experience. What they thought of, what they smelled, what food they ate, what their day was like, was it raining, did the uber eats guy forget their cutlery - All the details of lived human experience that would be quite impossible to ‘emulate’ or ‘generate’.

Though I speak of sketchbooks here, I speak of art more broadly. I think we should forget everything we know about the rules of ‘making it as an artist’ and ‘make art as an artist’ . The essence of art does not lie in a pretty picture or a perfect drawing or an immaculately written essay - the essence of it lies in the human experience. What YOU felt - your unique human experience which no-one else can ever hope to know.

The power of the artist lies in the ability to express their unique human experiences in ways that touches other’s lives.

And that, if you ask me, is great power indeed.

Meanwhile in the studio

1. Back to thinking about the best way to carrying supplies while traveling! I have an upcoming trip to Portland next week and have been obsessing about what to bring and how to carry essential sketchbook supplies! The ones you see below are leather tool and waxed canvas cases I have made to store my precious little supplies.

   

   However I keep iterating and making myself more tool rolls and cases to see if I can fit all my supplies in one neat package.

   

   

   Successful attempts will end up in my etsy shop cause I usually make too much after my exploratory stage.

2. Designing patterns for another set of block prints! This pattern collection is called California springs and is inspired by springs in California - the pattern below showcases the California poppies that pop up all over the country in spring in an art nouveau styled pattern. I am making digital as well as physical block prints, will post the finished digital collection next week!

   

   

3. Some new patchwork pouches up in Etsy shop - I had a lot of scraps left over from my block printed and waxed canvas fabrics and decided to make them into these useful pouches. You can store your edc gear or small tools or even cash/coins/cards. Link to Etsy shop here!

It’s been a while. While I don’t want to think and list all the reasons why I have not written, it does seem odd to re-start without acknowledging the gap.

Existing in the margins

A lot has happened since my last post. I picked up several new hobbies, visited new countries, flew back home, got out of my full time job, and began a career shift. As new information and technology infiltrated every aspect of my life, I found myself resisting more and more. I developed an aversion to words like 'posting' and 'social media.' I hated the idea of confining myself to labels like 'UX designer,' 'illustrator,' or 'graphic designer,' and the notion that my self-presentation needed to fit these descriptions.

When I started applying for jobs again, I received comments like, "Oh, but your portfolio has too much illustration for a UX designer." While I don't know what the right amount of illustration for a UX designer is, I was baffled by the hiring market's inability to recognize that people can have multiple skill sets. I quickly realized that employers expected work to fit into neat little boxes. The idea of existing outside the lines was confusing, so the expectation was to fit within the confines of labels that made sense.

This Substack article from beautifully captures the emotions behind the Stories that we tell ourselves about work.

Deep down, I felt drained and creatively unstimulated by the hustle culture in tech, even though I 'followed my passions' and chose to give myself an educational degree in something I loved. I imagined a creative life to be full of stimulation, new challenges, exploration, and play. So then the question arises: is work supposed to be fun? And if not, how do we reprogram our brains to be okay with that?

While giving interviews and applying for jobs, a nagging voice inside my head keeps telling me that perhaps this is not what I am meant to do. How am I supposed to know for sure? What if I am making a mistake?

After a couple of months of some healthy (or not?) mental gymnastics and soul searching, I finally decided to trash all the stories I told myself about ‘being successful.’ I decided to discard the hustle culture concept, throw away the idea that I needed to be miserable to make money, and stop pressuring myself into conforming to the boundaries set by others.

Permission to play

As soon as this line of thinking became more materialized in my head, I keep seeing signs (or maybe its just cognitive bias, but hey, whatever works) that validated my theory. From ’s weekly substack this line that he shared was everything -

A line I think about more and more these days, from Taleb’s Skin In The Game: “Anything you do to optimize your work, cut some corners, or squeeze more ‘efficiency’ out of it (and out of your life) will eventually make you dislike it.”

I started making decisions based on what I genuinely enjoyed, rather than what I thought I should like. I gave myself permission to create what I love, even if countless others were doing the same thing. It seems obvious now, almost to the point of absurdity, but this small shift in thinking has been incredibly liberating.

What matters is that I enjoy what I'm making and make steady progress. This might seem basic, but it feels monumental in today’s cluttered, noisy social media world where it appears everyone else has a better version of your idea. Every time I set out to create something, I find numerous similar examples and become paralyzed—how will I ever be good enough?

Perhaps this is the catch. Maybe I won’t be. And while it’s a bitter pill to swallow, I am trying to be okay with that. To make art like I used to when I was a kid - for the joy of it - not to be good enough. I wish someone had told me years ago to think this way—that you don’t have to be the best at something to justify your time in pursuing it.

I have a very important reminder from my brother tucked into my planner that reminds me everyday to ‘Aim for Average’.

Finding Community

In the past year substack has grown and with its growth, I have found some wonderful people to follow. These people have given me the strength and motivation to start writing again because I realized that my people are indeed here. People who share my fears and frustrations, and who have the same passions as I do. I absolutely loved ’s guide to Marketing without burnout. Her video walks you through a very sustainable and calm method of marketing that resonated with me. I even started drafting out my marketing plan after watching it!

1. I’ve recently developed a huge thing for block printing - it’s the perfect combination of graphic design and hand made application. I’ve been batch producing bags and small pouches to sell in consignment in a couple boutiques in San Francisco! It has been so fun! I’m also taking this course on the side to learn to build my pattern into a collection.

2. I just launched my Etsy Store where I sell hand stitched leather wallets and bags! I’ve been deep into leather craft for the past year and I’ve finally decided to sell it on a small scale.

3. I visited Barbados last march and it was phenomenal! I will probably do a separate article on this soon, because I have far too many pages and details to share but here are some sketchbook entries!

I tried embossing the letters into the spine of the journal to make it real fancy. It was successfull, I think.

So I have decided to write when inspiration strikes and when I have something truly interesting to share. My aim is to avoid adding to the overwhelming digital clutter we don't really need.

With that being said, today I wanted to share another toolkit!

I showed a glimpse of this kit in my previous newsletter issue but to recap - it was created as a solution to combat inertia on unproductive days.

A curated kit gathers all the necessary materials for a specific task, saving mental energy on sourcing supplies. In this post, I discussed a micro watercolor kit within this larger toolkit.

The featured kit in todays newsletter remains on my desk, providing easy access to my drawing supplies. As I designed it, I focused on three factors:

1. Ease of use: I opted for a simple wooden box that fits my studio needs, making it effortless to store items.

2. Ensuring tool safety: To keep my tools secure and organized, I lined the interior with leather and added elastic inserts for each item. Everything has its own designated place.

3. A visually appealing setup that evokes joy: aesthetics matter, and I wanted my tools to inspire me daily.

In the end, I’m pretty proud of how it turned out! It was a basic wooden box from Amazon - Here’s the link in case you want to check it out. I wanted it to look like it came out of an antique closet - so, I stained it, sanded it and then waxed it up!

And then you open it up and TADA! The upper section stores all my drawing and writing instruments. After lining the interior with leather, the elastic bands hold the tools in space, so they don’t scratch each other. It also makes use of space in an efficient way.

The bottom part of the case holds my watercolor supplies, an exercise band that I use as a rag cloth for absorbing water, cotton buds, a sharpener and other small accessories.

I love this brass sharpener that my husband raises his eyebrows at every-time I use it. He does not seem to understand why a sharpener needs to be so expensive, but what does he know about the art of sharpening pencils?

This super cool, really slim but very sharp knife that I sometimes use to sharpen my pencil to a specific point.

This pouch that I made with some scrap leather to hold a tiny water bottle and water brush.

True, if I am at home, I can always get water readily, but these are for the days when walking to the sink is too much effort.

On the other side, is a little pouch that holds extra leads, and a lead sharpener. Oh, and a tiny stapler!

I’m pretty proud that I found a way to store the lead and stapler in a discreet way underneath the pouch! I used a Japanese button stud to attach another piece of leather into the existing frame and it provided just enough space for the remaining small knick knacks I needed space for.

I made an additional holder for the lead sharpener and et voila - I was done!

So here is how everything sits inside of it as a whole. The velcro straps where already present in the box and I did not go to the trouble of removing it cause it provided some additional reinforcement.

I added a name plate just to make it truly non-standard and added a very ‘standard’ name but it makes me smile when I look at it!

Lately I have been thinking about analog tools and processes, perhaps due to the unique juxtaposition of advancing technology and traditional tools and process we continue to use today. On one end of the spectrum, we see artificial intelligence advancing its reach into all aspects of our lives. On the other end, we see an increased interest in analog tools, handmade things, journals, and experiences that allow us to ‘fully’ feel ‘human’. What might be this conundrum?

People seem to relish solid traditional objects to make sense of a complex and difficult world. The sophistication of digital experiences leave us craving for the haptic nature of physical ones. There is something calming about claiming the simple pleasures in life. Feeling the scratch of a pencil lead on paper, staring into the blazing flames of a campfire, watching a stew bubble in cooking pot - there is a contentment to performing these activities with time and attention.

However, when was the last time we had the time to do these things for ourselves? But that’s when I realized - perhaps, it is not about time. Perhaps, we have forgotten that way of life. 

This interesting article from Maria Poppova discusses what the author George Dyson explores in his book Analogia. Here is a quote that I liked from the article :

There are four epochs, so far, in the entangled destinies of nature, human beings, and machines. In the first, preindustrial epoch, technology was limited to the tools and structures that humans could create with their own hands. Nature remained in control.

In the second, industrial epoch, machines were introduced, starting with simple machine tools, that could reproduce other machines. Nature began falling under mechanical control.

In the third epoch, digital codes, starting with punched cards and paper tape, began making copies of themselves. Powers of self-replication and self-reproduction that had so far been the preserve of biology were taken up by machines. Nature seemed to be relinquishing control. Late in this third epoch, the proliferation of networked devices, populated by metazoan codes, took a different turn.

In the fourth epoch, so gradually that almost no one noticed, machines began taking the side of nature, and nature began taking the side of machines. Humans were still in the loop but no longer in control. Faced with a growing sense of this loss of agency, people began to blame “the algorithm,” or those who controlled “the algorithm,” failing to realize there no longer was any identifiable algorithm at the helm. The day of the algorithm was over. The future belonged to something else.

A belief that artificial intelligence can be programmed to do our bidding may turn out to be as unfounded as a belief that certain people could speak to God, or that certain other people were born as slaves. The fourth epoch is returning us to the spirit-laden landscape of the first: a world where humans coexist with technologies they no longer control or fully understand. This is where the human mind took form. We grew up, as a species, surrounded by mind and intelligence everywhere we looked. Since the dawn of technology, we were on speaking terms with our tools. Intelligence in the cloud is nothing new. To adjust to life in the fourth epoch, it helps to look back to the first.

Dyson explores the possibility that we are in an era that we can no longer control, that we co-exist with technology we no longer fully understand. To be able to understand this present era, it might be beneficial to look back to the past.

I found this to be an interesting topic to muse over - to try and understand what our species is collectively trying to achieve and how that individually impacts us. Personally, my daily life is one of the areas in which I see the effects of constant use of technology most evidently.

In his book Digital Minimalism, Cal Newport talks about how the human brain is not wired to be constantly using technology. He explains how our brain feels better when we ‘fix’ a broken window or ‘make’ an origami paper plane. From this particular article, (which I highly encourage you check out) he also mentions how (physical)activity makes the human brain feel better. These are the two points that stood out the most to me.

• Many of the best uses of the online world support better living offline. We’re not evolved for digital life, which is why binges of online activities often leave us in a confused state of strung out exhaustion. This explains why many of the highest return online activities are those that take advantage of the Internet to improve important aspects of your offline life.

• Activity trumps passivity. Humans, deep down, are craftsmen. We find great satisfaction in creating something valuable that didn’t exist before. Some of the most fulfilling online activities, therefore, are those that involve you creating things, as oppose to simply consuming.

This might explain why there is an entire industry of board games that have gained popularity among those who are constantly tied to their desks in front of their computers. It feels good to solve problems in an analog way - away from the screen, by touching cards, rolling dice, making conversation and socializing. This reduces stress levels, releases dopamine and in general decreases anxiety. Removing these physical experiences messes with our mind. We are anxious and tired - as a generation. 

Newport also mention something really important that I would like to emphasize - this is NOT to say that technology is to be rejected. It is to simply reconsider the possibility of new tools and activities (or should I say old tools and activities) that got replaced. It is a nudge to simply rethink the analog experiences that we have replaced with digital ones and carefully consider if it is serving us or hurting us.

One good rule of thumb he mentions is - Stay wary of technology that did not solve a problem that didn’t need solving. (For example : Snapchat). These products were likely created to support ad sales by fostering additive behavior.

I felt lucky when I started my career as a designer. I got to do something I loved everyday and get paid for it. Working on the computer was my primarily job as I am an illustrator/graphic designer. I was glad to do this for a couple of years - I got to design stuff all day after all.

After a couple of years however, I started noticing that I felt out of touch with myself. I was creating everyday but somehow it felt like I was missing something. I remember bringing a sketchbook to work everyday to doodle in during breaks and after hours. It felt oddly relieving to hold a pencil, to feel the texture of the paper, to flip back the pages and see what I drew the week before. It also felt nice to see the smudges and the mistakes, the strikes, the oddly shaped lines in the absence of the Cmd/Control Z button. It was a representation of my honest unfiltered creative self. In the sketchbook pages below, it is easy to see how my confidence and style evolved over time.

From then on, I am a huge proponent of keeping a sketchbook or a notebook (for those who don’t draw). Why? Because :

Analog experience : It gives you the opportunity to have a haptic, wholesome, away-from-the-screen experience ; to feel a pen and a paper. If you have not written in a long time, you’ll notice how wonky your hands will feel holding a pen again.

It’s one of the best ways to jot down thoughts and ideas. Yes, you can do this on your computer too but there are somethings that are advantageous about a notebook.

• Limited space: You can’t create a 100 point to-do list. After a while you’ll notice how ridiculously ambitious the list is looking and you’ll start prioritizing in a much more efficient way. (Ask me how I know).

• Memory Retention : For some reason, ideas written down in the computer get forgotten (at least for me). The format of a notebook allows me to flip back to my ideas and re-read them again and again. I can re-assess my ideas and decide on which ones may be worth re-visiting. If I type it down in a computer application, I never look back at it. Why? I don’t know. Maybe I like flipping pages or something. Point is - Your notebooks induce curiosity - if you have a small notebook in your hand, you instinctively flip through it. I believe this makes revisiting notes more probable.

• Portability: A pocket notebook can be taken anywhere and everywhere, a computer/laptop can’t. A phone can but see point above.

• It’s fun: It’s fun to flip back or revisit your old notebooks - it will make you remember the time you wrote down stuff and the associated memories of that time in your life. 

Overtime, I have mastered the art of keeping multiple notebooks and different curated kits to go with it and can vouch for how useful they have been for me. Which brings me to….

A Prompt : Keep a pocket notebook for 1 week

Materials needed : A pocket book (any brand, any type, any color), a pen/pencil 

What to do : Write something/literally anything - one word/one sentence/a paragraph/ten pages/whatever you want, every day for seven day. DO NOT FORGET TO DATE IT. 

On day 7, try to remember what you wrote on the first day. If you don’t, that’s okay, I don’t think most people do. You can flip, go on. 

Ideas on what to write :

1. What you ate

2. How you feel (simple words like angry/tired/happy/even ‘ugh’ qualifies)

3. What you saw outside your window

4. The weather

5. One thing that made you happy

6. One thing that made you annoyed

7. List of people you secretly want to punch

You get the idea. It can be anything. NOTE : It does not have to be a profound reflection of the meaning of life.

I think it’s a fun little exercise for everyone to try. You’ll be surprised how bad your memory is. And also how much you enjoy looking at what you wrote for the past seven days. Please, please, PLEASE share photos if you do end up doing this! Here are some peaks at my pocket book notes for inspiration!

This is a reminder for me and for everyone! Not everything/anything in your book needs to be a work of art - your pocketbook is yours to use as a tool to organize you brain. Since everyone’s brain is different, there is no ‘right’ way to use a book.

My food journal entries showed how the food I ate changed depending on who I was with and where I was at. It also spoke to how I was feeling - if I missed home, or if I was stressed, if I had too much work or if I was lonely. The pages were abundant with emotion.

This past month, I had the opportunity to be part of the Isolation Journals - a community led by an amazing woman, Suleika Jaouad. The aim of the 30-day project was to keep a writing practice everyday for thirty days - a journal, if you will. The journal, however, turned out to be so much more. Not only was the experience transformative on shedding light to what a consistent creative practice can clarify, it ultimately enabled me to start this newsletter.

During the course of four weeks, Suleika went over the different forms of the journal. I particularly wanted to highlight something that she mentioned about the food journal or the Epicurean journal.

‘Writing about food or drink is a way into writing about so many other things that are important to us, like community, novelty, pleasure, tradition, or the singular joy of a bright yellow egg yolk.’

Like she mentioned, I realized how these pages are documentations of my culture and the rituals I unconsciously follow, narrating a deeply personal aspect of my identity. Food is also the closest tie we have to our ancestral roots - rekindling in us feelings of security, comfort and connection. I can not count the number of times I have yearned for a simple bowl of rice, fish and vegetables after a tiring day. There is an unexplained sense of comfort one garners from eating the food they grew up with.

Food is also closely tied to our cultural identities and associations of perceived gender roles. As I was thinking about this, I remembered this wonderful podcast from Racist Sandwich about Race, Family and Food with Amy Lam. Amy talks about her immigrant upbringing and how her relationship with food defined how she felt towards cooking.

“ It was deeply ingrained into my mother’s work ethic that her life is centered around food and cooking. My father wanted me to learn how to cook like my mom, even though, they were impressing upon me that I need to get a good education and get a good job, but yet also fulfill this gender role of being their good daughter and in the future being someone’s good wife - although my younger brothers did not have the same expectation.“

She goes on to discusses with her co-hosts how her immigrant mother never followed recipes from ‘cookbooks’ - she just knew the right proportion of spices, the right temperature to cook the meat, and the particular way to cut up ingredients for her complex recipes without having to refer to anything.

I could totally understand this sentiment - My mother has the largest cookbook in her head, and can retell any one of her hundred recipes at the notice of a phone call and I always marvel at how one could do this - especially considering the nature of complex Indian recipes.

When thinking about food, it’s almost impossible not to think about how food awakens all our other senses too. The crispy chew of a potato chip and the pungent smell of a roasted garlic are all memories that form associations for each of us in our own individual ways.

Being Indian, I can never think about food without thinking about how the house smells of roasted spices when I came back from school. The smell of fried fish always reminds me of home, no matter where I am.

Pondering about this, I realized that food is a universal way to communicate. At the most human level, being fed is the most fundamental way of communicating that we are cared for. The most powerful and unifying factor of food perhaps lies in this : We can always share a meal together even with those whom we can not have a conversation with. It is one of the simplest and easiest ways to express that we love each other.

With that, here are some spreads from my food journals ! Each page has something different highlighted about that day.

1. I was alone on this trip and saved the little note from the door dash receipt!

2. Another meal where I saved the bill along with shopping receipts from the evening right before. The steamed buns were so good!

3. Amazing noodles from Marugame Udon, Waikiki. If you ever go, you MUST try their noodles!

4. Had handmade noodles from NYC again and saved this extremely expensive bill from the bar downstairs just to remember how absurd it was!

5. If you are in Monterey and need a good, fresh, filling (and cheap) sand-which, try this place called Compagno’s Market and Deli ! Get a to-go and walk to San Carlos beach which is at the end of the road, and you can sit on the rocks and have your meal.

6. I did not get time to draw the food on this day because I was ravenous and gobbled everything up as soon as it got served, but while waiting, I drew the people standing in line + saved the little umbrellas from the pineapple juice!

As promised last week, I also wanted to share a bit about the tools I use when I travel to journal and sketch. This is like my favorite topic in the world, so…here goes!

On tools of trade and my DIY watercolor kit!

If you are an artist, or a writer or a baker or do any sort of creative activity, you know how important your tools are.

What counts, in making art, is the actual fit between the contents of your head and the qualities of your materials.

- Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking

In my personal experience, I am most likely to sustain a creative practice if both these points are true.

1. If my tools are easily accessible : If it’s going to take me anything more than 3 minutes to source all my materials to create something, the likelihood of creating anything is going to get reduced by half. It is very important that I have everything I need at the easiest access point so there is least amount of resistance.

2. My tools should be a joy to use : I need my tools to be both beautiful and functional. Sometimes I open my sketchbook just to use a new pencil or feel the tip of the pen and this enables me to create more.

On that note, I would like to present to you my ingenious travel watercolor kit that I configured after numerous failed attempts, years of trying different things and frustrated screams. All the materials I used are readily available, so you can make your own! :D

Today I want to highlight the watercolor kit and all it’s components. It’s small but mighty!

The brass case is actually a cigarette holder. It is durable, strong and is a perfect pocket size. It has these two hinges with bars that is actually meant to hold cigarettes in place which works out well to hold all the little pans without movement!

Here’s a detailed shot of everything in the picture!

1. Brass cigarette case - I got mine from amazon.

2. Disposable palette paper attached to a business card for mixing paint

3. A kitchen towel / tissue

4. This foldable ruler that fits right in here that also acts as a protractor.

5. Water-soluble graphite pencil - I use these!

6. A mini-water color brush which is very good quality - I think it’s Windsor & Newton? I’ve used it so much that the brand name faded out.

7. Eye shadow palettes in different sizes!

8. Magnetic sticker sheets

9. Small putty eraser, small hard eraser cut to fit inside

10. Small sponge cut to size

By lining the insides of the brass case with a magnetic sheet, you can place the eye shadow/paint palettes anywhere within and you can be sure it wont move! I’ve found this simple palette of three basic colors and two additional pigments of water soluble graphite works well for me, but the great thing about this kit is that you can add in any number of color you want!

And the best thing is that it fits within the palm of your hand!

Now, you might ask, does this teeny tiny palette work? Can you really create good artwork with this?

Proof is in the pictures! I feel the limit really allows me to create without thinking too much. Because of the small size, I also use this handy kit at home when I am too lazy to take out all my painting supplies.

While thinking long and hard about what to write in the first edition of my newsletter, I was reminded of the song - ‘A Little Bit of Everything’ by Dawes that I have been hearing in loop this past week. I particularly like the version covered by the singer Lizzy McAlpine. While the warm rendition and evocative musicality surely captured my attention, I was drawn more to the heart breaking yet hopeful lyrics of the song.

In order to frame this discussion, it is better to catch the lyrics here in this youtube version. For those of you who may not have clicked that link, I’ve pulled the first two stanzas of the song so you can read.

With his back against the San Francisco traffic,
On the bridges side that faces towards the jail,
Setting out to join a demographic,
He hoists his first leg up over the rail.
And a phone call is made,
Police cars show up quickly.
The sergeant slams his passenger door.
He says, 'Hey son why don't you talk through this with me,
Just tell me what you're doing it for.'

'Oh, it's a little bit of everything,
It's the mountains,
It's the fog,
It's the news at six o'clock,
It's the death of my first dog,
It's the angels up above me,
It's the song that they don't sing,
It's a little bit of everything.'

Now, before you become flabbergasted on why I would start my first post quoting the stanza of a song that appears to be talking about suicide, I would like to intervene and say that Dawes is talking about something much more fundamental. He is talking about life and the associated hope and hopelessness present in it. In the second verse, he talks about the journey of an old man standing in a buffet line trying to hold on to hope after experiencing loss.

I want a little bit of everything,
The biscuits and the beans,
Whatever helps me to forget about
The things that brought me to my knees,
So pile on those mashed potatoes,
And an extra chicken wing,
I'm having a little bit of everything.

The last verse talks about a bride-to-be, who sees beauty and hope in her future marriage although she is tired of her present wedding preparations. She proclaims that what she looks forward to getting is ‘a little bit of everything’ as opposed to - ‘a stupid little ring’.

'Cause it's a little bit of everything,
The way you joke, the way you ache,
It is waking up before you,
So I can watch you as you wake.
So in the day in late September,
It's not some stupid little ring,
I'm giving a little bit of everything.

Most things about our life are not within our control - where we are born, who we are born to, our bodies, our looks or even who we love. Dawes tries to articulate through this song the simple observation that our life is a haphazard stack of moments, emotions and relationships bound together by our attrited memory. There is no simple solution, no magical insight that can help us figure out why things are the way they are. Sometimes, it really is just a little bit of everything.

I believe that what we have agency over is what we put out to the world, what we chose to share, what we chose to preserve and to cherish. This newsletter is going to be just that - A little bit of everything in my life - my hopes and dreams, passions and angers, art and music, whines, complaints and opinions - A culmination of things I want to remember and want others to remember me by.

As a species, we humans have unique social characteristics. In fact, my MFA dissertation was on the very topic that we humans thrive in tribes.

Apart from needing social connectedness for good mental health, one the most important aspects of the creative process is inter-disciplinary collaboration. While I knew this for a long time, I struggled with building an online community using social media platforms. The confusing algorithm, the limited mode of content that can be created, and the overall feeling of shouting into the abyss left me feeling more alone than together.

So I thought I’d give newsletters a try! The unique thing about Substack is that, this relatively new sans-algorithm platform allows me to build a community from a group people who want to read about my life and work. This sets a great basement to build an engaged community who care about the ideas explored in this newsletter to interact in a meaningful way.

Today, I want to share my journey in mindfulness.

An Unconventional Method to Mindfulness.

Here’s my tiny tale. The other main character in this story is my husband who graces us by his un-featured presence with some encouraging(?) words.

As you can see, meditation is not exactly my forte. For the longest time, I believed that mindfulness meant learning to meditate. However, lately I have come to realize that one can practice mindfulness in many ways.

I recently discovered the Ten Love Letters to the Earth curated by the Emergence Magazine in honor of the passing away of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. In these letters, he bows his head to the beauty of the natural world and talks about finding happiness by being present in nature.

I want to walk gently, with steps of love and with great respect. I shall walk with my own body and mind united in oneness. I know I can walk in such a way that every step is a pleasure, every step is nourishing, and every step is healing—not only for my body and mind, but also for you, dear Mother Earth. You are the most beautiful planet in our entire solar system. I do not want to run away from you, dear Mother, nor to hurry. I know I can find happiness right here with you. I do not need to rush to find more conditions for happiness in the future. At every step I can take refuge in you. At every step I can enjoy your beauties, your delicate veil of atmosphere and the miracle of gravity. I can stop my thinking. I can walk relaxingly and effortlessly. Walking in this spirit I can experience awakening.

This further validated my theory : I’ve found a sneaky way to be more mindful this past year by becoming a specimen collector!

Admittedly, it started after my brother gifted me a specimen collection kit for Christmas, but all is well that ends well!

Now, I am not sure if this is what Thich Nhat Hanh meant, but the act of collecting specimens from nature has attuned my senses to appreciate and observe my natural surroundings much more.

Walks have become relaxing and hikes have started to become exciting. I notice the flowers around me, the patterns on the leaves, the different types of seeds, the critters and creepers within them and all the little animals running around trees. With the recent rainy season in California, spring has decided to bloom in all its splendor. It has been such a joy to collect, document, photograph and draw these natural specimens.

Today, I would like to share some spreads from a number of my journals in the hope that you would be inspired to start one too!

A three leaf clover I collected after yet another unsuccessful attempt to find a four-leaf clover. If you don’t know what’s special about four leaf clovers, check this article out!

A spread that reminds me of the beautiful northern shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

This spread is special because it helps me remember the legend of the Naupaka flower. There are many version of this Hawaiin folk tale. It’s a beautiful story. Read it here.

This is my favorite specimen collected so far! It’s from Byodo-in-Temple in Oahu, Hawaii and it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to.

A journal from a trip to Monterey. I collected a wildflower from the bushes by the beach in San Carlos.
